Between 5 and 6 weeks old, this pair of Great Blue Heron chicks has found their wings.
They take turns with flapping practice. I haven’t seen any lift offs, yet.
There isn’t enough room for them both to flap at once when they stand in the security of the nest bowl without risking pushing the other one out.
The do occasionally move towards the edge, with very little but their balance to hold them in.

I guess it won’t be long before they fledge. I really have enjoyed watching them grow. Excellent series!
Thanks, Belinda! I think the parents may need to kick it up a notch on bringing food the chicks are growing so fast.
Wow, I still can’t get over how quickly these little guys are growing up. It’s been so exciting watching them get bigger and overcome obstacles like when their nest was attacked or when one of the parents tried feeding them a whole fish when they were too little for it. lol
You’ve done a great job capturing their growth and all the hiccups and now milestones along the way. 🙂
