It was “this big!” Really!
I don’t know how far he had flown with the flounder, but after landing the heron just stood there for a minute looking around. He then waded out into the water and rinsed the fish.
Satisfied with that, he flew into a marsh inlet with his catch, probably hoping to avoid potential fish thieves.
I always love shots of Great Blue Herons and am amazed at the size of the fish that they can catch and swallow.I particularly like the first shot of the incoming heron with the beautiful shadow cast onto the land at the water’s edge.
I’ve often thought we would see them choke, but somehow they manage! Thanks, that was fun as I didn’t even realize when I saw him coming that he had the fish. I was happy not to be getting a butt shot!

Thanks! Could be, although any feeding I’ve witnessed the Heron regurgitated the fish, also still whole!
It’s only “gross” if you’re not a bird!
