Black-bellied Whistling Duck in Tree

Black-bellied Whistling Duck

This is the first Whistling Duck I have seen in South Carolina. He was perched high in a tree over a pond and I couldn’t even tell what it was until I zoomed in on the image in my camera.

The duck periodically threw his head back and made a very un-duck like sounding call.

A pair of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks flew by, but didn’t slow down to listen to the one in the tree and he didn’t make any effort to join them.

There was still about a half hour until sunset, but the sun, which was behind me, was disappearing into a cloud bank, taking the light and any possibility of a colorful sunset with it.

  1. Interesting post Ellen. Firstly, the duck throwing his head back made me smile – for some reason I imagined him yodelling! Secondly, I really like the last photo – its sparse and the single duck gives an interesting focus, and the sky background has a beautiful quality to it. Its almost like the universe is taking a deep breath!

    1. Thanks, Liz! It sounded more like yodeling than it did a duck, at least the ones I’m familiar with. Thank you for your comments on that last photo, I’m glad to know you liked it. I like to give a broader view of the location, especially when the scene was this good.

    1. It was pretty cool. Ted had left me on a dike where it is too narrow to park when another car came. I had a great time wondering along and was happy that neither car had disturbed the duck, at least I don’t think he was speaking to us!
