Forster's Tern Fishing

Forster’s Tern

After watching the relatively sedate Bonaparte’s Gulls Feeding at the beach a Forster’s Tern came along and showed off some different flying skills.

It was all about speed.

Hover, dive and repeat.

With the rolling waves and lack of contrast I didn’t get a full splash down image.

Yes, they are fast!

In between stronger gusts of wind the tern hovered higher over the water as he looked for food.

  1. Those are difficult shots to capture. I try that with pelicans, but they dive so quickly and on a dime that it’s hard to react to get the shot.

    1. Many, many shots deleted in between, David! It certainly makes it easier when you can predict the bird’s flying behavior. The pelicans’ quick turns are a challenge to photograph.
