Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers feed at sapwells, shallow holes they have drilled in tree’s bark.
Like other woodpeckers, Sapsuckers are industrious, and usually their work is in tidy rows.

As the sapsucker worked around the tree additional sapwells came into view.

I always consider it special to see one of these woodpeckers. It’s the first one I learned about years ago when I worked as a volunteer at an environmental education center – I loved how the naturalist taught us its name!
They are fun to watch and they go about their work.
