This Prothonotary Warbler’s nest is in that cavity, and the parent spent several minutes poking his head in, like he was moving something around.
I did not see if he brought something on this trip to the nest, like he did when I spotted the parent two days before: Prothonotary Warbler Bringing Food Home
The hole is about my eye level and I did see one chick beak when I passed by.
The parent did fly off with a fecal sac, something I hadn’t seen up close before.

It’s a treat to discover a nest so near the walking trail. That yellow is s real stand out.

Thank you, it was a real treat to see this so close. I was dismayed to find the nest site destroyed a couple days ago. The opening was enlarged and partly torn away—it’s possible the young had fledged but more likely became lunch.
Yes…. Sounds probable, I guess. Unfortunately the cycle of life goes on. 😢What a special opportunity to see what you did beforehand!
We do witness some harsh realities while we are out with nature; it surely makes me appreciate what it takes for birds to survive.
