  1. I am pretty sure, Ellen, that this one is a male Blue Dasher dragonfly, a species that loves to do these kinds of handstands. Sometimes they will even stand almost straight up in a pose know as the obelisk pose that is supposed to be a way for them to regulate their temperatures by minimizing their direct exposure to the direct sunlight.

    1. Darn, I almost went with the dasher, not the first time I’ve gotten it wrong. Thanks for the info, Mike, and that’s quite interesting about the posing and temperature regulation.

      1. Thanks, Ellen. My technique and equipment have improved a bit over time but that first image is a good reminder to me that you don’t have to have lots of experience or expensive gear to get good shots.
