Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker, Learning to Forage

There were two Pileated Woodpeckers in a Live Oak tree above my head, picking through the Spanish Moss and Resurrection Fern. The vegetation looks lovely in the tree, but sure limits photography of birds.

I never saw what they were eating but it appeared to be berries or nuts, and no pecking was going on.

It is likely this was an adult teaching a juvenile as a few times the younger looking one was just watching then got fed.

One came out into the open just before they flew off.

  1. That is quite something Ellen to get a photo of one feeding the young. Great shots, I hear them around my place, but they are so hard to see. They are fast and take off quick if they see me moving.

    1. Yes, I was pretty happy to see them together, even at that bad angle. Thanks. I hear them way more often than see them, behind our house and a few of the wildlife areas we frequent, hoping for a glimpse of that red-top!

  2. I like what Ted said, it is the same for us here. I have seen the bears a few times but when husband is with, they are never around. 🙂
