Oval Drawing Room, 3 Details

Showing some more detail of the sensory overload in the Oval Drawing Room, this is a close up of the Georgian Gothic crown molding. The museum tour indicates this is made of plaster with 22 Carat gold leaf.

A wider view shows the rounding of the corner and the top corner framing of the panel mirrors.

From the hallway the Oval Drawing Room glows with natural light when the sun is shining, as it was this day.  The room to the left is the Withdrawing Room, which runs across the entire front of the house.

Oval Drawing Room, 2

The Oval Drawing Room on the second floor of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum is something of a sensory overload.

Every type of architectural detail is decorated–the gilded cornice, the door frames, the frames around the window.

In addition to helping reflect the candlelight of the era, the panel mirrors were another statement of wealth.

I suspect they were also disorienting to late night party attendees.

The Oval Drawing Room on the second floor of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum embodies the flaunt-it lifestyle of the mercantile elite of the late 1700s – early 1800s Charleston.

The tea set has plenty of its own bling, with opulent decoration.

Panel mirrors and cornice gilding helped brighten the room for after dinner parties, reflecting candle light.

Wading, Swimming, Lurking

The Great Blue Heron was wading, two American White Pelicans swam by, the Alligators were just hanging there. And just a flash of pink of a Roseate Spoonbill preening in the grass.

Audience Unmoved

They’ve seen it before…so have I but I still like to photograph it.

Cormorant Supervising

Double-crested Cormorants were calmly sunning on the Spoonie Tree when a Great Egret dropped in.

Then a Black-crowned Night-heron joined the gathering.

It was close to a crash landing, but the Night-heron made it, perhaps to the surprise of the Cormorant.

Then the Night-heron lost points for not sticking the landing. Not that anyone is keeping score.

Black Vulture Pair, Lounging

Two Black Vultures were hanging around on the ground at the end of the dike along the big pond at Donnelley Wildlife Management Area on Saturday. They were oddly indifferent to human presence, just flying up into an oak tree as I got closer.

It had been a cold morning, just down to freezing, and they both seemed content in the sun as the day warmed up.

This one actually hunkered down on a branch, as if to stay awhile.

Katydid, Swamp Sunflower

I spotted this Katydid in a tall stand of swamp sunflowers, a bit above my eye level.

The bloom shows signs of having been snacked on by something. If it was this fellow he had gone into post-lunch stupor as he never moved in the ten minutes or so I was there.

Fall Colors, An October Wander

Small bits of color attracted me on an October walk around Magnolia Plantation and Gardens with my 180mm Macro lens.

Viewing a Magnolia seed pod at eye level reveals texture, color, and some intrigue as the red seeds were beginning to appear.
