A Reddish Egret was feeding in a shallow pond, pretty calmly for a Reddish Egret.

I was disappointed not to see any of the wild abandon they often display as they feed.

Calm was working for him on this morning.

He snatched several small edibles from the water, making little ripples.

Doesn’t look like it was sunny at the time.. do you think this accounts for the lack of action? Their performance is to do with shading the water isn’t it? I’m curious 🙂
Interesting question, Liz. 😁 There are wading birds that hold up a wing to add shade or change their view into the water. I’ve seen Wood Storks, Great Egrets, Little Blue Herons do this. The Reddish Egrets may also, but being a rarer bird and one we have to travel to see I don’t have as much experience with them.
The Reddish Egrets also display more of a ballet move, dancing and darting, and I have to say I do not know how much the sunlight might play into their choice.
My 2018 post https://passingbyphoto.com/2018/02/09/reddish-egret-the-dance/ has some images of one that was really working it!
Thank you Ellen!
You are welcome, Liz!
