Snakes were what I saw the most of on my recent visit to Beidler Forest. I’m not a big fan, but have grown to appreciate their habits since moving to SC.

The positions they arrange themselves in are pretty interesting, including a little flare with the tail.

It was a partly cloudy day in the mid 70s (24-25C) and these three were in spots that were in and out of the sun.

What type of snake is this, Ellen? The Girl Scout in me says triangular head, poisonous…? Terrific and brave shots. 🙂
I think your inner Girl Scout is correct. My husband says they are Cottonmouths, based on coloration, triangular head, and slit eyes. I don’t like to even look at the sign that explains them that much! Not so brave, they were all down off the boardwalk so I wasn’t that close. At least I didn’t see any on the boardwalk 👀.
They are deadly. I remember when living in SC reading that they can leap from the water at their prey. That’s nightmarish!
👀 Ain’t that the truth!
Looks like a copperhead and a big one. I agree it has the poison pouches
My husband thought Cottonmouth, but either way not to be approached by me!
Magnificent creatures.
We saw our first snake this month also, sunning on the bank of the lake. Its head was hidden under a log, so not sure if it was poisonous or not. This one is definitely poisonous. Between the alligators and the snakes, you really have to watch where you walk.
A sign of spring, for sure! Neither the snakes or alligators want a human encounter, but you can be sure I keep my eye out for both.
