Despite their small size ( less than an ounce –about 20 grams) Carolina Wrens are the loudest singers of the birds I regularly see.

Known for aggressive scolding as they defend their territory, it felt like this one was singing just for us as we wandered by.

Singing its heart out … how close was it when you took the photo?
The wren was close, Liz… maybe eight or ten feet, about 2 meters. This was near the parking lot and ticket kiosk at Magnolia so I suspect the little fellow was quite used to being around humans.
I’m amazed the wren was that close to you, Ellen. What a lovely encounter and fantastic photo opportunity!
Me, too—I couldn’t even spot him at first, expecting he must be further away.
