Amidst the nesting activity at the Cypress Wetlands rookery I spotted two Cattle Egret, including this one that was looking for a quiet spot.
What a beautiful bird ! Especially the first and definitely the last photo, where its crest is raised. I looked it up for a moment and didn’t expect to find it in Belgium, but apparently it does occur here, mainly during our spring and summer. I haven’t spotted one myself yet, though I read they’re on the rise, so there’s hope. Have a great weekend, you and Ted !

Yes, Cattle Egret breeding colors are quite striking. The rest of the year they are plain white, at least the ones that we see. And yes, they do hang around with cattle or other farm animals.
It is quite interesting how bird populations shift around, responding to changes we hardly understand.
