Usually dragonflies are pretty still when they perch.

This fellow was adjusting his wings as the wind was moving his perch.

It was a dull day with not enough light to really capture the insects’s orangey color.

But with his wings up you can see their golden look.

I played around in Photoshop with your image, Ellen, and was able to get a better look at the dragonfly’s beautiful orange color. It is not a familiar species to me, though, so I can’t help you with an identification.
Cool–thanks for checking it out. It was one of those times you wished you could get to the other side of the subject with better light! I’ve seen a tremendous variety the last few weeks.
We are definitely into prime time now with many of the summer species around and I suspect that is even more the case where you live.
