Two Armadillos

Armadillo Pair

Usually when I see an Armadillo it is partially hidden by heavy brush or making a fast exit. This was one of the few times I’ve seen Armadillos out in the open and the first time I’ve seen a pair together.

They were just off a wooded walking path, very intent with their snouts to the ground.

As I walked towards them they didn’t give any indication they heard me.

They just kept rooting around in the pine needles as I passed by.

  1. Cool shots, Ellen, of these armadillos. I have seen armadillos in the wild once, when I was visiting Augusta, Georgia for a wedding a few years ago. They are definitely odd-looking creatures.

    1. Thanks, Mike. They are pretty bizarre looking. They only arrived in SC in the mid 1980s and I’ve read that their range is continuing to spread northward, so they may get to you!

  2. There must have been something very tasty in those pine needles. Neat pictures and glad they gave you the opportunity for good shots.

    1. Bugs, grubs, and who knows what creepy crawlies would appeal to them. They have poor eyesight so it’s all about the feel and smell. Thanks, glad that you liked them.

    1. I was pretty surprised, especially two together! Don’t know if you saw my comment to Mike, but they are new in SC starting in the 1980s and their range is continuing to spread northward. They may end up at your east coast base for you to see. 😁
