A few Great Blue Herons have started staking out the best nest sites around Ravenswood Pond at Magnolia Plantation.

On December 6th there were a few colored leaves left in the background trees to make an interesting capture.

This GBH practiced a few mating calls.

And poked a few sticks around the nest area. Not much new material had been flown in but you can see this location has an excellent support structure when the time comes.

The leaves do frame the bird wonderfully. I particularly love the mating call shot 😊.
Thanks, Belinda! We were back there a couple days ago and all the leaves have fallen, time for just the silver – grey backgrounds of winter.
Very nice series, Ellen! ❤️
Thanks, Donna!
Gorgeous photos Ellen, I love the background to all of these photos. I would love to see them building a nest one day and see this ritual that they do. Beautiful shots.
Thank you, Sandra, so glad that you liked them! It really is something to see—you would love it.
Great shots, Ellen. The great blue herons are nesting here as well, and unfortunately, I simply haven’t been out nearly enough to catch many photos of them lately!
Thanks, Carol! I hope you get some time to do that—even though we’ve seen it before it is a wonderful experience.
Yes! Every year, every visit is very special.
