Dragonfly Patrolling Over Alligator Ramp

Dragonfly On Patrol

It had been a slow morning for photographing wildlife so I stopped for this young Alligator. I didn’t see the dragonfly until I was looking at the images on my computer.

After the first image I moved along for a different angle of the Alligator, still not seeing the dragonfly. He was following a tight flight path, with just two seconds between the next and final images.

The Alligator is probably 2 to 3 years old, based on his size and camouflage coloration.

  1. At camp one year, we were on time for the “Dragonfly Rally”. They were everywhere around the island. I’d see one out in the middle of the lake and tell it “You better get back to camp. You’ll get eaten out here.”
I have several photos from that memorable trip that appear to be bare patches of water, or the edge of the water with a kayak half out of frame. They look empty to others, but I can point out the dragonflies racing by, waving their checkered flags!

    1. Very cool to see them in action like that, Paz. What a great memory.
I was scared of them as a child when we would see them along a river or at camp. My dad always said they were just waiting to sew our lips shut.
