Musical Cherubs, Azaleas

I hadn’t photographed the festive cherubs in a few years and wanted to see how they looked amongst the azaleas.

A sprinkling of azaleas were in bloom behind and off to the sides of the statue.

Years ago Ted called this statue “Freaky Babies” so of course that is what I think every time I pass it. He a nice B&W version from a visit in February 2021 which in a post he aptly named  Freaky Babies.

Sandal Binder Statue and Azaleas, 2026

One year and one day after I took the images from last year’s post, it was another glorious Azalea day at Middleton Place. And, once again “Sandal Binder” was a photo opp. The images are not much different, but it was lovely to be out there.

This marble statue of woman putting on a sandal  survived the Civil War and now watches over a pond surrounded by azaleas and Spanish Moss.

The marble statue is circa 1810, by Rudolph Schadow, and is also known as “Sandal Binder” for the German “Die Sandalenbinderin.”

Boy With Duck Statue, About Face

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is dotted with statues, most of them some version of painted white which over time can get grimy looking. The area around Boy with Duck was recently cleared and the statue was turned to face the path rather than the pond.

I have seen some of the statues get cleaned of the clinging moss, lichen and who knows what debris. I would like to see him stay with this patina; I think it gives him a bit more character.

Musical Cherubs

A troupe of five cherubs are nestled in one of the garden paths at Middleton Place.

You first see it down a straight shrub-lined path, which draws you in.

Last week when I was there some late Camellias were in bloom.

A closer look of the Cherubs; it looks like the statue has recently been cleaned, which rather highlights their imperfections.
