Camoflaged Turtles

Yellow-bellied Sliders were taking advantage of the sun on a recent walk around a pond, positioning themselves on anything sticking out of the water. They had traveled through duck weed and other pond vegetation to get to the coveted spots.

I don’t think the vegetation does a thing to protect the turtles. Alligators, the apex predator in this pond, follows his prey by motion and is himself camouflaged by the same pond covering.

The smallest turtle I saw added a leg extension to his pose, probably needing a little balance to stay on the pointed rock.

Wood Storks in a Dead Tree

There were hundreds of Wood Storks in the trees at the back of the field and in the rice field canals, most of them tucked down or just too far away for good images. This dead tree served as a perch for a small group of storks and couple stray White Ibis as they rotated in and out of the distant trees.

One or two would land and almost immediately on or two would ext the tree. This was another one of those natural happenings that seemed to have a secret signal.

There was another canal between me and this tree but that water didn’t seem appealing to any of the wading birds on this afternoon.

The fluffy white clouds were building up pretty quickly and provided a more interesting background than plain blue sky.

Blue-winged Teals Over the Marsh

Last Saturday was a spectacular bird day at Bear Island Wildlife Management Area and these Blue-winged Teals were one of the many groups of birds I saw. The water had been lowered in some of the back ponds which attracts the wading birds, shore birds and migrating ducks.

The reeds at the edge of the canals are above my head in most places so I did not have a clear view of the teals until they took off.

Hovering Belted Kingfisher

With amazing flying skill the Belted Kingfisher can hover continuously while eyeing the water below for a fish. I watched this one through two cycles of hover and dive; he didn’t enter the water either time.
