I did not think this Limpkin would nail his landing, expecting him to flutter on down to the ground.

He surprised me with a shift of his weight, flap of his wings and he was back upright.

The three Mottled Ducks splashed a bit then took off.

What I took to be the female flew off to the right, while the two males looked headed for a crash with the Spoonbill.

The Spoonbill ducked his head…

as the dueling pair came in for a landing, squabbling for a moment, before they went their separate ways.

What I really wanted was a nice picture of this Snowy Egret lined up with the Pelicans in the background.

Sometimes the terrain keeps you from getting in the right spot and you take what is available.

After watching the Mottled Duck pair land I was surprised to see there was a third duck approaching.

I didn’t hear him land so am not sure where he came from.

He quickly paddled over to the pair where he was not welcomed.

The situation got tense!

The light made this pond appear a shade of blue that matched the Little Blue Heron that was patiently hunting.

Little Blues make very precise water strikes when they fish, making a delicate splash.

And a water ripples.

No luck that time, back to patiently watching.

I was watching this Roseate Spoonbill, hoping he’d come a bit closer, when a pair of Mottled Ducks dropped into the scene.

Not quite a crash landing, but not that graceful, either.

The Spoonbill and a Gallinule went about their business.

Compared to their size, these ducks make a pretty big splash.

The pair quickly settled and paddled across the pond.

Here’s another series of a pair of American White Pelicans making a water landing.

This fellow had a more muted color palette than other Reddish Egrets I’ve seen.

He did, however, have the Reddish Egret moves, dashing back and forth.

Wait for it, wings up to change the lighting…

splash, and

success!

Onward -you’ve got to do a lot of fishing when your catch is that small.
