Butterflies on Lantana

I’ve recently commented that I haven’t seen many butterflies this summer. Last week at Middleton Place I was surprised to find several species, three that were attracted to Lantana.

First was this rather tattered Black Swallowtail.

This Buckeye was another tattered example.

Then a very good looking Fritillary.  I always say the ones I see are Gulf Fritillaries, but that may not be true.

Bee on Lantana

Lantana bloom all summer long but are really noticeable in the fall when a lot of the annuals in flower beds have passed their prime.

In the first two images the bee’s eye has rather a weird glow, perhaps part reflection from the flowers.

The bee was fully investigating the flowers.

He was quite methodical, going back and forth, completely covering the flower head and giving me a variety of body angles.
