The boat and bird seemed suspended in time, barely moving.
Neither was going to reach its destination before the sun went down.

Sundown on 2019
- The sun slipped below the horizon with very little fanfare tonight from my vantage point on the western coast of Florida.

Sunset Over Marsh
I was standing on the eastern end of Folly Island, facing the marsh behind the barrier island. The pool of water in the foreground has been created by the shifting shape of this beach where a low spot has recently been carved out above the normal high tide line. Tidal action and storms continuously change the barrier islands and I won’t be surprised if the next big storm carves a piece of this land into its own island or washes it away completely.
Sun Going Down
This was our first night in the area and I scouted a sunset spot using Google Maps and The Photographer’s Ephemeris phone app. The color was subtle over Brickyard Creek and there wasn’t much of a foreground but it ended up being a pretty good choice.
After the sun disappeared three kayakers worked their way back to the boat launch, impressed with what they had seen. Voices really carry over water!

This time of year the sun is not at the best angle for showing off the shrimp boat rigging but the expanse of orange sky was still pretty nice.
Laughing Gull and Sunset
The sky was a beautiful orange glow behind a Laughing Gull perched on a dock piling.

Laughing Gull, Last Dive of the Day
We stopped at a dock to watch the sun go down and this Laughing Gull made a few last passes over the water.
The reflecting sun made interesting blue and orange stripes in the water.
In a matter of seconds the color disappeared along with the bird.

Beach Sunset
I joined some photographer friends at Folly Beach yesterday afternoon to watch the sunset. Fall sunsets there can be very dramatic with pink often playing a big part. This one didn’t live up to “spectacular” but it was pretty and we had fun during the waiting.
The water in the foreground of this image is a tidal pool left by recent very high tides.
This couple was peddling away from the sunset.
This dog clearly can’t read. His owner, a few steps to the right of my frame ignored this and the “Dogs on Leash at All Times” sign he had just passed.
Actually there is no more than average danger and no one “Keeps Off” this cement walkway that leads from the parking lot to the beach. In fact you can’t see this warning if you are on the walkway. The water is the end of the tidal pool seen above.
Loose dogs are another matter.
