Red-headed Woodpecker

Red-headed Woodpecker

The Red-headed Woodpecker is a bird that I have only glimpsed, generally flying away from me. Then a few weeks ago I saw two in less than ten minutes!

The second one, perhaps a mate to the first, tormented Ted and me with knocking that we could not locate. Who knew they could make such a racket inside a tree?

Once out of the cavity he stuck to the shady side of the tree.

    1. Me, too, Belinda and it was surprising how long he stayed there just looking around. It would be neat to see what the inside of that cavity looks like.

  1. I’ve only seen a Red-Headed Woodpecker once (also flying away!) Have rarely even been near one. These pics are terrific, Ellen! What a sight to behold. I wonder if all woodpeckers hammer away inside their tree holes?!

    1. LOL! Thanks, Carol, glad that you liked them. It sure was a treat to see them. Probably a little re-decorating goes on, I wondered too, why we didn’t see chips flying or being pushed out the hole. How much room is in there? Inquiring minds want to know…
