The Red-headed Woodpecker is a bird that I have only glimpsed, generally flying away from me. Then a few weeks ago I saw two in less than ten minutes!

The second one, perhaps a mate to the first, tormented Ted and me with knocking that we could not locate. Who knew they could make such a racket inside a tree?

Once out of the cavity he stuck to the shady side of the tree.

Wonderful to get such great views of these red-headed woodpeckers!
It really was a thrill just to see one that clearly, and to get a photo!
He did torture me a while too. 😂😂😂
🙃
All great shots but the 2nd is my favourite 😊
Me, too, Belinda and it was surprising how long he stayed there just looking around. It would be neat to see what the inside of that cavity looks like.
great photos
Thanks, Alice!
Congrats, great find! We have an area at Blackwater NWR that fills with Red-heads nesting in the huge bog of snags. Love these birds!
Thanks! Oh wow, that would be fun to see, Donna.
I’ve only seen a Red-Headed Woodpecker once (also flying away!) Have rarely even been near one. These pics are terrific, Ellen! What a sight to behold. I wonder if all woodpeckers hammer away inside their tree holes?!
LOL! Thanks, Carol, glad that you liked them. It sure was a treat to see them. Probably a little re-decorating goes on, I wondered too, why we didn’t see chips flying or being pushed out the hole. How much room is in there? Inquiring minds want to know…
