Mute Swan Show Off

The pair of swans that live at Middleton Place’s Reflection Pool spend their days patrolling up and down the pond or lounging on the banks with the occasional turtle or small alligator enjoying the sun with them. On my recent visit two workmen were trying to dislodge a clog of the pool’s drainage system. One of the swans was not keen on sharing his territory, making his presence known with fluffed up wings and neck displays.

Horned Grebe

It was a grey day and a mostly grey bird so not much contrast, but this Horned Grebe gave me quite a show.

He circled around in front of me, and even gave a flap…

and a stretch.

I was expected him to dive, which I had seen him do when I was some distance from him.

Diving wasn’t in his plan and he paddled away towards the Atlantic Ocean.

American White Pelicans, Closer

American White Pelicans follow the fish when they are feeding, back and forth. The “forth” was good for me as they came a bit closer to the pond edge.
