Backyard Carolina Anole

Young Carolina Anoles have been a steady source of entertainment on our patio and porch this summer as they figure out how to get around and find lunch.

Potted plants seem like a jungle around these little fellows, which are not as big around as a pencil when they first hatch.

The adults are either hiding from the heat or have become lunch for a passing bird.

Anole, Shedding His Skin

This is probably a Carolina Anole, due to the bright green color. They have the ability to change to a duller green or brown, depending on the temperature and their environment.

This one is shedding his skin, which is brought on by growth: like other reptiles their skin doesn’t grow with them.

Anoles become less active when going through the shedding process and this one picked a dangerous spot at the edge of the swamp to just hang out. He would easily be seen by a passing bird who could snatch him up for lunch. I left before that happened.

Anole Against the Grain

The texture and color of this Anole made a nice contrast with the tree bark as he posed perpendicularly to the bark grain.

He very considerately made a 90 degree turn to show off the effect of his body with the grain. His tail didn’t completely follow.

This Anole looks a little different than most of them that I have seen with the white stripe down his back and rougher and more speckled skin. Click on either image to get a closer look.

Reptile Day at the Swamp

There aren’t many wading birds around my favorite swamp right now but I still like to walk around it at least once a week and I always see something. Sunday it was reptiles. We have had some cold weather but Sunday was in the low 70s (about 21 degrees C) and turtles, lizards and alligators were out soaking up the sun.

Turtles were crawling out of the water. They often just move onto the bank of the swamp making it easy to retreat. This one was more ambitious and got a completely dry spot.

The Brown Anole did a nice job selecting his wooden perch for camouflage and full sun. When I passed he disappeared down a crack in the middle of this dead stump.

The Alligators care little about being seen. Usually they can sink and swim many feet away in seconds if they feel the need to escape. The dead tree limbs this one was in between might have slowed him down if a real predator was after him. He was content with this spot; he hadn’t moved when I returned by him twenty minutes later.
