Roseate Spoonbills, Barnacle Stump

A pair of Roseate Spoonbills wandered back and forth in the shallow water, doing bird stuff.

One of them was intrigued by barnacle covered stump for a few minutes.

Based on their light color and feathers still on their heads, both of these birds are young, probably last year’s chicks.

A few Roseate Spoonbills continue to come and go around the big pond at Donnelley WMA.

Vegetation is really greening up in and around the pond.

Last week the water was low so the base of the “Spoonie Tree” was fully exposed. And yes, I remain amazed that the tree is still standing.

Common Buckeye on Fleabane

Several Common Buckeye Butterflies were visiting patches of fleabane along the dike at Donnelley WMA on Friday. This first one was looking a bit tattered.

The next one didn’t flit around quite as much, and gave me several views.

Blue-gray Gnatcatchers Nesting

A pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are making a nest in a Crepe Myrtle in our back yard.

They have been gathering material for a few days and this morning I spotted the nest. Here one of the pair was smoothing around the outside of the bowl shaped nest.

Much of the viewable material appears to be lichen or small pieces of dried leaf.

The pair worked cooperatively when they arrived back at the nest at the same time, one handing off material to the other to work into the structure.
