Boat Pond Maintenance, False Start
Conditions were right on Wednesday for the fire to be set in the Boat Pond at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens to help manage the invading cattails and other reeds. Unfortunately it started to rain before the burn was complete so there will be another session. This morning the perimeter trail was still closed so I couldn’t really see what has happened.
This is what it looked like in September, before the water was drained.
This river-side pond was created as a rice cultivation field, probably in the 1700s. It’s referred to as the Boat Pond because Magnolia offers nature tours by boat around the pond. The channel seen in the second image was dredged and widened three or four years ago.
Long White Bridge, Rear View
A lot of vegetation has been removed from the pond in front of the Long White Bridge at Magnolia Plantation over the last couple of years. Some was due to storm damage and some seems more like over zealous pruning. Previous years there would always be something flowering… Azalea, Magnolia, Calla Lily, Hibiscus…throughout the summer and into fall. This year has been mostly green whenever I’ve been.

Resurrection Fern, Front Lit
A view of the fern featured in my post Resurrection Fern, Back Lit seen from the other side. The branch was conveniently parallel to the ground and just at my eye level.
Regrettably, I didn’t take an image that shows how big this branch is.

Ashley River at Magnolia Plantation, Low Tide
Looking up the river from the rice field dike at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens on a recent morning. The river is tidal, and I find the changes in flow fascinating. Here it was close to low tide and the water appeared to be barely moving.
