Seeing The Forest and the Trees
Oval Drawing Room, 3 Details
Showing some more detail of the sensory overload in the Oval Drawing Room, this is a close up of the Georgian Gothic crown molding. The museum tour indicates this is made of plaster with 22 Carat gold leaf.

A wider view shows the rounding of the corner and the top corner framing of the panel mirrors.

From the hallway the Oval Drawing Room glows with natural light when the sun is shining, as it was this day. The room to the left is the Withdrawing Room, which runs across the entire front of the house.

This home has been restored to its 1808 appearance and is part of the Historic Charleston Foundation collection.

Oval Drawing Room, 2
The Oval Drawing Room on the second floor of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum is something of a sensory overload.

Every type of architectural detail is decorated–the gilded cornice, the door frames, the frames around the window.

In addition to helping reflect the candlelight of the era, the panel mirrors were another statement of wealth.

I suspect they were also disorienting to late night party attendees.

Oval Drawing Room
The Oval Drawing Room on the second floor of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum embodies the flaunt-it lifestyle of the mercantile elite of the late 1700s – early 1800s Charleston.

The tea set has plenty of its own bling, with opulent decoration.

Panel mirrors and cornice gilding helped brighten the room for after dinner parties, reflecting candle light.

Wading, Swimming, Lurking
The Great Blue Heron was wading, two American White Pelicans swam by, the Alligators were just hanging there. And just a flash of pink of a Roseate Spoonbill preening in the grass.

Fall Colors, An October Wander
Small bits of color attracted me on an October walk around Magnolia Plantation and Gardens with my 180mm Macro lens.

Viewing a Magnolia seed pod at eye level reveals texture, color, and some intrigue as the red seeds were beginning to appear.

Early Camellias had bloomed, this one with a robust center.

Yet another single swamp sunflower bloom that I couldn’t resist.

Santee Delta By Boat, Reflections
Santee Delta By Boat, Wood Ducks
Our guide on the Santee Delta trip was an excellent bird spotter, and saw this small flock of Wood Ducks coming in for a landing.

Taking pictures of a small moving bird from a small moving boat gives so-so results, but it was fun to see them.

The ducks, or at least one of them, seemed to think they’d better fly right back out.

And of course the rest followed along.

This section of the river was lined with grass and reeds, a perfect spot for Wood Ducks to hang out.

Santee Delta By Boat, 1
The first week of November we took a boat trip in South Carolina’s Santee Delta, about half way between Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

We starting at a public boat landing where US Route 17 crosses the North Santee River and headed up river. These images were from the first stretch of the river.

Once we passed a few docks with moored boats it was easy to imagine our boat of ten folks as the only humans for miles.

A variety of trees line the river bank, and were in various stages of color and leaf loss.
