I had a rare opportunity with a Carolina Wren out in the open this morning, and on an interesting branch.
He made a quick flip before diving into the underbrush, showing me his other side.
This is a bird that has mostly eluded my camera despite how common they are, even in my back yard. I was pretty happy to get both shots.

I remembered this delightful bush as I wondered some lesser traveled paths at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens a few weeks ago.
This plant is surely the gift that keeps on giving, as it was just covered with these shapely yellow blooms.
Some of the singles left on a stalk were real stand-outs.
Most of the plant was covered with these clusters.
I had posted images of this plant last December not knowing what it was. Fortuitously, the most recent Magnolia Newsletter had an image and identified it as Cassia.
A little plant research shows there are a number of varieties of Cassia and I’m just going to let it go at that.

A few Great Blue Herons have started staking out the best nest sites around Ravenswood Pond at Magnolia Plantation.
On December 6th there were a few colored leaves left in the background trees to make an interesting capture.
This GBH practiced a few mating calls.
And poked a few sticks around the nest area. Not much new material had been flown in but you can see this location has an excellent support structure when the time comes.

This Oak Tree was nearly bare, giving me a good view of a Female Anhinga and a bit of color from the few remaining leaves.
Can you do this with your neck?
Easy stuff for the very flexible Anhinga.
Several Eastern Bluebirds were poking around in tree cavities, presumably looking for food.
Occasionally one would take a break.
I’ve seen quite a number of Bluebirds around this fall but this was the closest I’ve been when I had a camera in hand.

A Palm Warbler was doing his thing in the lower vegetation at the side of a swamp.
As you may know, warblers of all sorts are speedy and are mostly photographed exiting the spot you noticed him. Fortunately for me, this one’s curiosity slowed him down.
Then he gave me a jaunty pose.
He heard something, gave it another look, then dove into the underbrush.

And he was on his way…
Gracefully dropping off his perch…
I thought he was going out of my sight to the right.
But I kept shooting… he surprised me by veering left, over the duckweed covered pond for one more good image.
